The Tracer line of hydrofoils is in the middle of the AK line with the high aspect ratio Plasma on one side and the low aspect ratio Trek on the other. The Tracer line draws a middle ground that combines user-friendly handling with enough manoeuvrability to offer fun carving while remaining solidly stable.
Our 850 Tracer setup consisted of a 71 cm aluminium hull, the 260 Mustache tail stabiliser and an 80 cm carbon mast. The wings are a clean carbon construction and combined with the carbon mast, the weight of this package felt really good. The AK system has many modular options to choose from, so you can customise every part of the setup to your liking. The parts are assembled with titanium Allen screws and the rear wing offers a simple shim adjustment to set the lift or pressure on the front foot to your liking. It's worth noting that the carbon mast plate has shallow holes and no countersunk holes. So if you need to replace hardware at your local hardware store, you will need to look for pan head screws or washers to match the flat surface of the mast.
The 850 winds up at a reasonable board speed, which is appropriate for the smallest wing in the Tracer foil series. The Tracer felt quite smooth when foiling, with a little more positive lift in the early stages of launch, but overall it felt very user friendly for a smaller 850cm foil wing. The Tracer's wings combined with the carbon mast make this setup feel quite light, but also solid and crisp in the water. While the Tracer line is geared towards a mix of stability and manoeuvrability, we would recommend beginners to opt for the bigger/slower wings of the line. For advanced kiters, the 850cm size seems to be a good choice if they appreciate higher top speeds while maintaining stability and manoeuvrability.
