Checklist Start of Season Stand Up Paddling
With this checklist you are optimally prepared for the start of the season in spring or the holidays in Stand Up Paddling
Material check. Is everything there and does it work?
- Fin. For the US box fin, check that the screw and nut are still there
- Electric pump. Is it charged? Does it still work
- Hand pump. Still working? Cover the air-out opening once with your hand and pump 1x, it should have pressure
- Adjustable paddle. Does the clamp on carbon paddles still have all the screws? And does it clamp well? The rod should not twist. Turn the screw if necessary
- Inflatable sup- board. Possibly check valve, does it still open (pin goes up?) Take repair kit with you on holiday.
- Sup- hardboard, no dents/holes? Holiday with hardboards, take spatula for emergency repairs if necessary.
- Board-Tag / name tag. The name and address must be written on Boards.
- Leash mounted at sup- board?
- Is my kit complete? Board-Set, life jacket, board tag, sup-clothing, mobile phone in waterproof case
- Do I know the water and weather where I will be paddling? (prepare your trip)
- How to perform the efficient paddle stroke (set the paddle 15 cm longer than you are, stroke: keep the blade completely under water, forearm stays straight during the stroke, blade comes out of the feet)
- Laws (motor boats have right of way, stay on the right side of the water, overtake others on their left, natural zones: stay out of territory behind lines with yellow buoys, have a white light on your SUP in the evening)
Laws & Traffic Rules for Stand Up Paddling on the Water
- Right-hand traffic: Always keep to the right when on the water. This means that you must paddle past on the left side of people who are on the water.
- Right of way rules: sup have right of way over: motor boats, sailing boat under motor fishermen with white buoy
- sup have no right of way over: Course boats Sailing boats Professional fishermen (yellow ball (Lake Constance: white ball))
- Right of way applies between kayaks and rowing boats (vessels with equal rights)
- Visibility: Make yourself and your board clearly visible, especially in poor light conditions. Use bright clothing and/or reflectors. All-round lights are compulsory in the evening
- Safety equipment: Always wear a life jacket (compulsory)
- The alcohol limit on lakes and rivers is the same as in road traffic: a blood alcohol concentration of 0.5 parts per thousand by weight
- Although you can buy special electric motors for SUPs from one Swiss online shop or another, their use is unfortunately prohibited in Switzerland
- Shore protection zone: In Switzerland, there are special shore protection zones marked by markings or signs. Be prepared by checking the map of the lake online. Protected areas and restricted areas are signalled by yellow buoys.
These restricted areas may not be navigated. Stands of water plants such as reeds, rushes and water lilies may not be navigated. As a rule, a distance of at least 25 m must be maintained
- Course ship - The most important sound signal and the most dangerous:
- 3 x SHORT My engine is going backwards
- 5 x SHORT (or more) You must give way!
- 1 x LANG Attention!
Checklist for clothing and accessories

Quickly brush up on paddling technique
- Paddle length, the tip is 15 cm above your head when standing barefoot on the ground.
- The hands are shoulder-width apart and hold the paddle.
- Blade has the logo facing forward.
- Stand in the middle from board, knees slightly bent. The back is straight.
- Now bend at the waist and put your blade fully under the water
- Keep your forearm straight and with your upper hand push the handle forward, so with a straight forearm the blade goes backwards (like the gondola in Venice you use leverage and have more strength than pulling everything with your biceps).
- Keep your forearm straight until the blade is level with your feet.
- Now pull the leaf out and repeat the process. (The blade does not go all the way to the back of the board)
Plan your 1st day/route
- Remember to check the weather and water conditions before paddling
- Current water temperature & weather forecast Switzerland (external link)
- Holiday/ new waters. Check the current, tides, in the liquid possibly a dam etc. Weirs are to be avoided, many weirs are fatal if navigated
- Tell a family member where you are going and/or go in pairs
- Get comfortable on your first sup-tour. Warm up the muscles. Don't walk for too long. Build up your sup-paddling endurance
Be like the Fonzie...be cool
- If you paddle along plastic in the water, take it out and take it with you to throw in a bin
- We are a sup-family, so no slur on people with cheap iSUPs. One love
- Rather offer them to try your hardboard or premium-iSUP and carbon-paddle, so show them what else is out there
- Set a sup-goal for 2023. Example: Train for a long distance and achieve that you circle the whole lake from your usual starting point. And or Ride more than 30 km in one day
