Lifejacket, Lifejacket Switzerland - The ultimate guide
The requirements for life jackets and life jackets for various water sports in Switzerland vary depending on the activity and are regulated in various legal codes.
Switzerland (lakes, river)
- Children under the age of 12 must wear a lifejacket with a collar.
- Children aged 12 and over are counted as adults
- Adults, activities: sup, kayaking, windsurfing, wingfoilers, kitesurfers, wakeboarders - require a buoyancy aid (waistcoat) with at least 50 N. (without collar is permitted). Provides about 5 kg buoyancy. Action- sports like wakeboarding which needs impact protection (ribs) can also use an impact waistcoat or impact waistcoat with 50N.
- Adults, activities: sailing, motor boating - require a lifejacket with collar and at least 75 N. (with collar). Provides about 7.5kg of buoyancy.
- Swiss law does not require you to wear it, but to have it with you. This applies to life jackets and buoyancy aids.
- Surfdeal law: Children and people on fast-moving boats/boards must always wear them.
Sea
- 100 / 150 Newton: Sea in rough conditions (lifejacket with collar). Provides about 10/ 15 kg buoyancy.
- Buoyancy measurement: The buoyancy force of lifejackets and lifejackets is measured in Newtons (N).
- Buoyancy calculation: One Newton corresponds to approximately 0.1 kg of buoyancy. 75 N therefore provides 7.5 kg of buoyancy.
- Buoyancy chamber: The buoyancy is determined by the volume of the buoyancy chamber, which is often made of closed-cell foam or inflatable chambers.
Children up to 12 years - lifejacket with at least 50 N buoyancy
- A lifejacket with a collar or an automatically inflatable version with a collar is mandatory; it must fit well and have a secure fastening; the buoyancy should correspond to the body weight without having a minimum buoyancy requirement.
- Example: If a child weighs 13kg, they should wear a lifejacket designed for children weighing 10-20kg.
- The regulation for adults applies to children aged 12 and over.
Adults in boats=life jacket
- An individual life-saving appliance must be available for each person on board. Inflatable lifejackets with a buoyancy of at least 75N are also recognised as individual life-saving appliances, provided they can be triggered automatically or manually.
- It is permitted to wear normal, inflatable or automatically inflatable waistcoats, and traditional lifebuoys are also authorised. It should be noted that the law does not stipulate a specific interval for the maintenance of inflatable lifejackets.
- You can find the full text of the law at http://www.admin.ch/ch/d/sr/747_201_1/
Adults for almost all other activities (SUP, kayaking) - buoyancy aid with at least 50 N buoyancy
- The buoyancy aid must correspond to the size of the person wearing it. Buoyancy aids are waistcoats that comply with the SN EN 393 standard (at least 50 N) and are CE-certified (also described in ISO 12402-5:2006).
- From a distance of 300 metres from the shore, buoyancy aids must be carried for
- Stand-up paddleboards (SUP)
- Kayaks
- Rowing boats
- Rubber boats
- Windsurf boards
- Kitesurf boards
- wingfoil- and pump foil equipment
- Wakeboarders
- Water skiers
- Kneeboarders
- Funtubes/tyres that are towed behind boats
Tip for wakeboarders, windsurfers, kitesurfers, wingfoilers, pump spoilers.
- We offer impact vests that act both as a buoyancy aid and protect your body from impact. These waistcoats are also known as impact waistcoats.
- If you are looking for a product that has a buoyancy of 50 N or is CE certified, we can help you.
- Our waistcoats fulfil these requirements and offer you the safety and comfort you need.
- You can find the waistcoats in the sub-category Equipment_Collision waistcoat
